Motonosumi Shrine: 123 Red Torii Gates Extending Toward the Sea
Motonosumi Shrine: A Scenic Sacred Ground Photogenic on Social Media
Motonosumi Shrine in Nagato City, Yamaguchi Prefecture, is an Inari shrine said to have been built in 1955 following the oracle of a white fox. The sight of 123 vermilion-painted torii gates donated over 10 years from 1987, lined up toward the Sea of Japan cliffs, is overwhelming. Since being selected for CNN's "31 Most Beautiful Places in Japan" in 2015, tourists from around the world have been visiting.
Torii Tunnel and Sea Scenic Views
The torii tunnel continues for approximately 100 meters, with the moving performance of the Sea of Japan gradually coming into view as you walk through. At the cliff's edge beyond where the gates end, a panorama of the Sea of Japan spreads out. On clear days, the contrast between the blue sea and vermilion gates is particularly beautiful.
Unique Mechanism of the Offertory Box
The large torii gate at the very top of the shrine grounds has an offertory box installed at a height of 6 meters, and it is said wishes come true if you toss a coin in. This is also one of the popular spots for worshippers.
Surrounding Sightseeing
Combination courses with "Senjojiki" (a strange rock coastline with sea erosion caves, about 15 minutes by car) and Tsunoshima Bridge are also popular. Many people also enjoy surrounding sightseeing while staying at Nagato Yumoto Onsen.
Access
Car access is basic. Approximately 20 minutes by car from JR Nagato City Station. Parking available (may be crowded).
