Nagato Yumoto Onsen: A Yamaguchi Hidden Hot Spring with 600 Years of History

Nagato Yumoto Onsen in Nagato City, Yamaguchi Prefecture, is a historic hot spring resort continuing since the Muromachi period (approximately 600 years ago). Ryokan and hot spring facilities line the clear Otoduki River banks, with the quiet mountain atmosphere healing travelers. It is a distinguished hot spring with connections to Daineiji Temple (the Mori family's ancestral temple).

Hot Spring Benefits and Water Quality

Nagato Yumoto Onsen's water is sodium-calcium chloride spring, reputed to make skin smooth. It is said to be effective for neuralgia, muscle pain, and fatigue recovery, with many guests visiting for therapeutic purposes.

Hoshino Resort and Hot Spring Town Revitalization

With the opening of "Hoshino Resort Kai Nagato" in 2019, Nagato Yumoto Onsen suddenly became an attention-grabbing hot spring resort. New facilities and traditional ryokan coexist, and it is noted as a successful example of "hot spring town development" where the entire hot spring street has been renewed.

Daineiji Temple and Surrounding Sightseeing

"Daineiji Temple" near the hot spring resort is an ancient Rinzai Buddhist temple founded in the Muromachi period. Also known as the place where Ouchi Yoshitaka, the last lord of the Ouchi clan, met his end, the tranquil precincts are also a famous autumn foliage spot.

Access

Approximately 15 minutes by car from JR Nagato City Station. Highway buses from Shin-Yamaguchi Station and shuttle services from accommodation facilities are also available.
