Tsunoshima Bridge: A Spectacular Drive Floating on Cobalt Blue Sea
Tsunoshima Bridge: A Scenic Bridge Representing Yamaguchi
Tsunoshima Bridge connecting Tsunoshima Island in Hohoku Town, Shimonoseki City, Yamaguchi Prefecture, boasts one of Japan's longest free-access island-connecting bridges at 1,780 meters total length. The image of the bridge running over cobalt blue Sea of Japan and white sandy beaches is a scenic spot frequently featured in commercials and magazines.
Scenic Photography Spots
The observation deck in front of the bridge is ideal for photographing the bridge's full view. Particularly on clear days, the high water transparency makes the cobalt blue surface highlight the bridge. The bridge against the morning and evening light is also fantastical.
Highlights on Tsunoshima Island
Tsunoshima Island has the "Tsunoshima Lighthouse" (Important National Cultural Property, built in Meiji 9), with the area around the lighthouse developed as a park. The island also has campgrounds and swimming beaches, bustling with many families in summer. Seafood is abundant, with fresh sea urchin and turban shells available to enjoy.
Combining with Motonosumi Shrine
Nearby is also "Motonosumi Shrine" (a scenic spot with 123 red torii gates lined up toward the sea), and a course combining it with Tsunoshima Bridge for sightseeing is popular.
Access
Car access is basic. Approximately 1 hour from Shimonoseki city center via National Route 191. Taxis and buses from JR Nagato City Station are also available.
