Ube City: The Culture of an Industrial City Known as a City of Sculpture
Ube: A Yamaguchi City Where Sculpture and Industry Coexist
Ube City in Yamaguchi Prefecture is an industrial city that developed through the coal industry and chemical industry in modern times, but is also known as a "city of sculpture" that pioneered placing outdoor sculptures in public spaces nationwide. The "UBE Biennale (Nakanoshima Sculpture Exhibition)" that began in 1961 is one of the world's oldest outdoor sculpture competitions.
Outdoor Sculptures and Tokiwa Park
Outdoor sculptures installed throughout Ube City number over 200. The central presence is "Tokiwa Park," with numerous sculpture works placed throughout the park. The group of sculptures installed by the lakeside creates a unique space where contemporary art blends into the tranquil park scenery.
UBE Biennale
The UBE Biennale held in odd-numbered years is an international outdoor sculpture competition with participating sculptors from around the world. Prize-winning works are permanently installed in Ube City, enriching the city's sculpture collection.
Ube Industries and Industrial Tourism
Factory tours and industrial tourism of Ube Industries (now UBE Corporation), which supported Ube City's development, are also attracting attention. Factory night view tours are also popular, allowing enjoyment of the impressive night scenery of an industrial city.
