Yamanashi Prefecture is Japan's largest wine production area, with Koshu and Katsunuma districts of Kofu Basin known as the "birthplace of Japanese wine." Japan's first wine company "Dainippon Yamanashi Budoshu Company" was established in Yamanashi in 1877, with over 140 years of history.
Koshu Grapes and Koshu Wine
Koshu variety is a grape variety native to Yamanashi Prefecture with slightly reddish skin, Japan's own white wine variety. Koshu wine is a dry white wine characterized by delicate aroma and refreshing acidity, pairing superbly with Japanese cuisine. Global evaluation has been rising with awards at international wine contests.
Winery Tours
Katsunuma and Koshu City have many wineries where tastings, factory tours, and wine classes can be enjoyed. During the autumn (September-October) grape harvest season, the "Koshu City Katsunuma Grape Festival" is held, attracting many tourists.
