Narusawa Ice Cave and Fugaku Wind Cave are lava caves formed by Mt. Fuji's volcanic activity located in Fujikawaguchiko Town, Minamitsuru District, Yamanashi. Both are designated as National Natural Monuments and are one of Mt. Fuji World Heritage's component assets.
Ice Cave with Ice Remaining Even in Summer
Narusawa Ice Cave is a vertical cave with internal temperature extremely low at around 0-3°C year-round. Natural ice remains inside the cave even in summer, historically used as a natural refrigerator for ice in the Edo era.
Highlights of Fugaku Wind Cave
Fugaku Wind Cave is a horizontal cave allowing exploration of the entire 201m interior on foot. Inside, terrain unique to lava including lava shelves and lava stalactites can be seen. It has history of being used as a natural refrigerator for storing silkworm eggs.
