Oshino Hakkai: Mysterious Spring Pools Created by Mt. Fuji's Subterranean Water
Mt. Fuji's Subterranean Water
Oshino Hakkai is 8 spring pools in Oshino Village, Yamanashi. It is where snow accumulated on Mt. Fuji permeates the ground, and the subterranean water that has filtered over decades emerges to the surface. The transparency of the spring water is extremely high, characterized by clear pools visible to the bottom.
World Cultural Heritage Component Asset
Oshino Hakkai is included as one of the component assets when Mt. Fuji was registered as a World Cultural Heritage in 2013. Each of the 8 springs has its own name and legend, revered since ancient times as sacred places of Mt. Fuji faith.
Rural Scenery and Tourism
Around Oshino Hakkai, thatched-roof farmhouses and water mills remain, with mysterious spring pools scattered in rural scenery that could be called Japan's original landscape. Photographs of spring pools with Mt. Fuji as background are popular as classic travel photos.
